The Wounded Warriors Retreat

The Wounded Warriors Retreat will be built in the northwest Nebraska high country, on 80 acres of beautiful, ponderosa-studded land. The Wounded Warriors Retreat will give families a chance to heal from the pain of separation and the trauma of war.We will provide them with a week’s stay in a serene, safe, family-friendly place. Here parents can rebuild relationships with their children and each other, find solace and peace, and help heal wounds that too often devastate our military families.

The Wounded Warriors Retreat will be family oriented. Activities are designed to bring families closer together by providing memories that will last a lifetime. Horseback riding and hiking in the rugged hills, swimming, campfires and more will be offered.

Plans include construction of the Hagel-Kerrey Lodge, The Dunham Chapel, six family cabins, swimming pool, stables and staff bunk houses.

Wildlife is abundant, with elk, mule deer, turkeys, foxes, coyotes, porcupines and eagles.

Our land is a historic treasure: one can easily understand why the Lakota Sioux treasured and loved this beautiful, unspoiled land.

Honoring Warriors

The Hagel-Kerrey Lodge will honor the service and sacrifice of an earlier generation of warriors as it serves and supports a new generation. The lodge will be named for U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel and former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey. Senators Hagel and Kerrey served our country with distinction in combat operations during the Vietnam War. Senator Kerrey was awarded the Medal of Honor and both men were awarded Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in combat. Both went on to develop distinguished careers in the private and public sectors. And both know that the welfare of our military families is of vital importance to our country.

The Dunham Chapel will honor the service and sacrifice of Corporal Jason L. Dunham, USMC. This young Marine from New York was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for saving the lives of his fellow Marines by giving up his own. The chapel will represent the retreat's spiritual center, providing visitors with a beautiful place to worship and find peace. (Read about Corporal Dunham...)

Honoring Families

America's Military families will be honored by a lifesize statue which will be placed at the retreat. "Homecoming," commissioned by Wounded Warriors Family Support, will depict a family reunited after a long, dangerous, deployment overseas. The sculptor is Nebraska native Matthew Placzek.

The staute will honor the dedication and sacrifice of these families. Without strong and resolute military families, our nation’s military would not be able to deploy to defend our freedoms. It is our military families who are at war in their own way. For their thoughts are of a loved one thousands of miles away. The retreat will serve as a monument to our military families and as a tribute to the sacrifice and hardships they endure when our nation goes to war.
